Evaluation Question 1

Double Spread Page Analysis

The typography of this double spread pages main headline is a mature and sophisticated, this connotes that the magazine is for an older audience, it is also done in bold which signifies that it is the main title of the page. Underneath the heading a subtitle has been put to introduce the article for the readers so that they know what it is with out reading the whole thing, this can also be done to interest the readers into reading the whole article. In the subheading the name of the group has been done in bold so it stands out and the readers know who the article is about, also their picture has been put in, it is big and takes half of the page. The main image relates to the title ‘art of darkness’ as the lighting reflects a mysterious/enigmatic scene, the positioning of the artists is alos significant as the women is in the middle which suggests that she is being protected, however it can be argued that it subverts the stereotypical view of a women as she is an androgynous (which means that she is someone which looks both male and female) as she is dressed in male clothing. The article has been written in an interview style which suggests a journalistic/reportage style to signify the band’s importance.

Front Cover analysis

The genre of this magazine is R and B, the fact that he has no jewelery does not reflect with the theme of the magazine. However his facial features make him look angry or tuff which could suggest that his music is also strong and may have an angry tone to it. The words ‘the power of 50’ represents 50 cents (main image) status and shows that he was one of the main rappers at that time, it also connotes that he has the power of 50 inside him. 50 cents name is not put on the front cover of the magazine; this implies that he is known by lots of people. The image of 50 cent is a close up which is done to show that he is the main person in the magazine, also there is back lighting which makes the image stand out, and in addition it puts him in the centre of the magazine. The colours used (black, white and red) add a more serious approach to the magazine, the fact that the title is done in white on a red background makes it stand out more, also the red banner behind the title distinguishes that it is the main title. The fact that there is not much writing on the front cover of the magazine implies that 50 cent is the main person, by  doing this it makes him the centre of attention as the readers eyes will be on him instead of reading the sub-headings. On the side there are other people’s names which tell the readers that they are also inside the magazine however they are written in small font which advocates that they are not as important as 50 cent.

content page analysis

This content page is from the magazine vibe. The words ‘content’ is split up; this is their unique stamp that shows the readers which magazine they are reading. The front cover of the magazine is also put on the content page. The colour grey is done throughout the whole of the content page. Even though this makes it look dull it adds a serious mood to the magazine which could mean that their chosen target audience for this magazine is an older more classy audience of around 25-30s. The fonts of the sub headings are done in a classical way which could indicate that the magazine is for a more sophisticated audience. The makers of the magazine have chosen Mavado to be on the content page as he’s image is the biggest one connotes that he is important in the magazine and suggests that he will be featured in the magazine. As Mavado is a gangster in the music industry he relates to the genera of the magazine. To show that he recounts to the gangster theme he is wearing chain, bracelet, watch and a Gucci belt, also his head is slightly tilted shows that he is in control and the fact that he is looking straight at the camera shows that he has power but in a tranquil way.

rejected pictures

Even though I use him for my final magazine, I believed that the shirt he was wearing did not fit into my pacific genera. Also the wall looks slanted which I didn’t not want and half of his one hand is missing.
